time ago, we mentioned that president obama and mitt romney both will be in ohio today. keep in mind, ohio, the 18 electoral votes considered up to now a tossup, despite the fact that many polls have given an edge to the president. i promised you last hour john king, i deliver, of course, john king, good to see you, he's in columbus right now. and, hang on, john king, i do have to get this in, paul steinhauser, our colleague, in washington, he's updated our cnn poll of polls, and this is an average of nine national polls. and for the first time, in my recollection, this cnn poll of polls shows a lead for mitt romney. romney leading obama here, 48% to 47% in our cnn poll of polls. and, john, i'm ondering, since we're seeing this post debate swing, it appears toward romney, are the predebate polls in ohio that show that obama lead, are those pretty much null and void? >> i would wait until the top of the hour and release our new cnn poll from the state of ohio. i talked to the romney campaign, some sources in the romney campaign a short time ago, and they say they have governor romney

49, romney 47. colorado, obama 49, romney 48. both are dead heats within the margin of error. joining us from washington, democratic strategist marge mcclinton in for juan williams and mary katherine ham. the pugh number, 49-45 surprised me, mary katherine. same with you? >> i was a little surprised at how far it moved. i'm not surprised it's moving in mitt romney's favor. i mean, this was 70 million people watching and the guy who showed up, mitt romney showed up to do that job that night was the best he had ever looked and certainly obama, the worst he ever looked on a stage with someone else, i would say when we have seen him in the situations before. people tuned in those 70 million people thinking they were going to be a colts-packers fight, but they were surprised. i think the amount of that surprise worked in romney's favor. i will point out that the pugh survey is probably a little bit more republican than the electorate will end up being, which is something we've had a lot of discussions about. but i do think some of these number should be frightening to them of we've got 49-

. president obama and mitt romney are both hitting battleground states this weekend. the president will head to williamsburg, virginia today for debate camp. he is expected to stay until tuesday where he'll then travel to new york for his second debate against romney at hoft ra university. romney will travel through the buckeye state today making several stops. >>> protests in d.c. are nothing new but one proposed protest features some unusual participants. two men are planning a rally called the million muppet march. in the first presidential debate romney said he would cut funding to pbs even though he loves big bird. that sparked an outpouring of support in favor of big bird. the men are hoping for a rally on the mall november 3rd the saturday before the election and they're planning to have skits and musical performances featuring the muppets during that rally. and it will be a rocking good time in ohio next week as the boss will meet up with a former boss. former president bill clinton will join legendary rocker bruce springsteen at a campaign event in the buckeye state. president clint

. mitt romney holds rallies in both ohio and iowa. and i want to take another look at those two polls that everyone is talking about this morning. they seem to paint different pictures of this race. the pew research center gives mitt romney a four-point lead over president obama. 49% to 45%. that survey did include more likely voters who identify themselves as republicans. however, the latest gallup tracking poll has president obama leading mitt romney 50% to 45%. this poll does include voters who were surveyed before the presidential debate which most voters say romney won though interestingly enough, it showed movement toward obama yesterday. all right. hard to keep track of. there's a lot going on here. cnn political reporter peter hamby joins us live from washington. please, peter, make sense of this for us. >> okay. these are the first two real credible polls we've seen since the debate. the bottom line here is there's movement in both toward mitt romney. you're right. the gallup poll had about three days of sampling before the debate that showed obama winning. after the debate,
